Assisi Rosso 2008 D.O.C.
Extract from "THE WINE ADVOCATE" - Robert M.Parker, Jr.'s Closing Date: 6-30-10 Issue: 189 Assisi Rosso 2008 89/100
Sportoletti’s Assisi Rosso is one of the great values in Italian wine, and the 2008 is another in a long line of gorgeous wines. Ripe red cherries, tobacco, sweet herbs and spices are some of the nuances that emerge from this juicy, plump offering. The 2008 is a touch more lithe than some previous vintages but it is nevertheless outstanding for its overall balance and sense of harmony. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2013. It’s nice to see Sportoletti back in the US market. These new releases are all highly recommended. Even better, they won’t break the bank. Importer: Massanois Imports, Washington, DC.

The Assisi Rosso by Sportoletti brothers (Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet blend) embodies the spirit of this Guide. Its constant, high quality is astonishing and, combined with the relatively simple blend, makes it perfect for the categories of customers the Sportoletti winery intends to target. It is an immediate wine having intriguing scents and combining fruity notes with delicate, spice flavors. The mouth is smooth and full, never banal or too heavy.

Assisi Rosso 2007 D.O.C.
Extract from "THE WINE ADVOCATE" - Robert M.Parker, Jr.'s Closing Date: 8-31-08 Issue: 178 Assisi Rosso 2007 89/100 Sportoletti is best known for their top of the line Villa fidelia, but their entry-level Assisi Rosso is not slouch either. In fact it remains one of the great values in Italian wines today. The 2007 Assisi Rosso offers up attractive bright red fruits intermingled with spices and scents of sweet toasted oak. Although it is a tad leaner than the terrific 2006, the 2007 possesses notable elegance and finesse at this level. Simply put this is a delicious glass of wine.

Assisi Rosso 2007 Quality/price Oscar
It is difficult to find new epithets for this wine. Maybe, it is exactly its strength, the irrefutable evidence of a work that started years ago and that incessantly goes on today. Every year, the Assisi Rosso leaves us gaping with astonishment thanks to its precise and reassuring, productive and stylistic criteria. We dare say that the 2007 harvest delivers a more intense and deep flavor, with original herbaceous hints within a frame of liveliness and clean taste.

Sportoletti - Assisi Rosso DOC 2006 Oscar: value for money If, by chance one day, leafing through the pages of the almanac you don't find the Sportoletti brothers' Assisi Rosso among the Oscars, it would have to be a results of our forgetfulness or over sight. Assisi Rosso 2005 D.O.C.
Wines of the week Montreal Gazette - Saturday, December 22, 2007 BILL ZACHARKIW
It is rare that a wine's quality does not reflect its price. However, there are exceptions. The wines of the week are reserved for those wines that show both exceptional quality and outstanding value. $15-$25: Mid-priced marvel Assisi. Easy. Assisi. Easy. Say it. Drink it. Believe it Assisi 2005, Rosso, Sportoletti. Italy red, $21.20, SAQ # 10782077. Funny how Assisi rhymes with "drinks easy." This is one of the most quaffable bottles I have come across in a while. It wins the "drinks way too fast" award. This is one of those wines that will please most - ripe and juicy but with soft gentle tannins, and this peculiar acidity and fruit that made me think of cranberries wrapped in a coating of white chocolate. If this is your choice for your holiday dinner, buy a couple of extra bottles - you'll need them. Drink now-2009. Food pairing: Roast turkey, pasta, tomato-based vegetarian meals.

Sportoletti's 2005 Assisi Rosso (a blend of 50% Sangiovese, 30% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon fashioned by renowned winemaking consultant Riccardo Cotarella) was aged four months in 3-year-old French oak barrels. It boasts a gorgeous perfume of sweet white chocolate, black cherries and black currants as well as an opulent, pure, rich, smooth style. Drink it over the next 3-4 years.

Sportoletti - Assisi Rosso DOC 2005 Oscar for excellent quality/price ratio
Extraordinary as usual: the consistently high quality of the Sportoletti brothers’Assisi Rosso and the 2005 vintage is not exception. The grapes are the usual variety (Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet) and the result, as usual, doesn’t change; freshness and definition on the nose, fruity notes and sweet spices. Consistent on the palate, sappy, with good structure and progressive taste. In it’s category, a real winner.

Extract from "THE WINE ADVOCATE" - Robert M.Parker, Jr.'s Closing Date: 08-29-05 Issue: 160 Sportoletti - Assisi Rosso 2004 90/100 "The Sportoletti family, one of the leaders in Umbria, produces superb wines from their 50 acre-vineyard. A superb introduction to the portfolio, the 2004 Assisi Rosso is a blend of Sangiovese e Merlot aged in used French oak. Its dense ruby/purple colour is accompanied by a rich bouquet of raspberries, cherries, earth, and high quality cigar smoke. It possesses a terrific texture, sweet blackberry, cherry, and strawberry fruit flavours, good glycerine, a delineated mouthfeel, and a lusty, heady, complex finish with savoury tannin. Drink it over the next 1-3 years. A gorgeous value."

Ruby red with purple tones, its olfactory presence denotes youth with an initially winey impression which blends with hints of cyclamen, wild rose, woodland strawberries and lightly spiced undertones. On the palate it is medium-bodied, pleasant and very drinkable, distinguished by a dash of freshness which makes you want to taste it again. Matured for 2 months in stainlass steel and 3 months in wood. Beef stew.

Extract from the monthly "GAMBERO ROSSO", n.158 - March 2005 "Tasting up to 8,00 euro" Sportoletti - Assisi Rosso 2003 82/100 TAKE YOUR HAT OFF TO IT: this year's Assisi Rosso is one of those that isn't easily forgotten. Of course this is a wine which is accustomed to outstanding performances and yet the climatic conditions of 2003 have given it something even more than usual: clean aromas of ripe cherries, cut grass, sweet spices and cinnamon. In the mouth it is dynamic and elegant: a continual chasing between the fruity sensations and the pungency of the spiciness. An advised purchase.

- Assisi Rosso 2001 Doc -
Extract from THE WINE ADVOCATE – Robert M.Parker, Jr.’s Closing Date: 12-31-02 Issue: 144 Sportoletti – Assisi Rosso 2001 90/100 …The newest effort, the 2001 Assisi Rosso, was aged in used barrels from the Villa Fidelia. A blend of equal parts Sangiovese and Merlot, it is a seductive, delicious, hedonistic Italian red with gobs of sweet black cherry and currant fruit presented in a forward, plump, lush, succulent style. It spent only six month in wood, thus the fruit dominates this medium to full-bodied, sumptuously fruit driven effort. As the wine sits in the glass, notes of espresso and cola join the sweet black cherry and berry fruit aromas and flavours. Drink it over the next 1- 2 years.

Extract from the EXPRESSO GUIDE “ VINI D’ITALIA” 2003 Wine Writer :Alessandro Masnaghetti Sportoletti – Assisi rosso 2001 15/20 …. The Assisi Rosso also remains convincing. The 2001 vintage represent one of the best “second choices” of the region.
Extract from “VINI D’ITALIA” 2003 –GAMBERO ROSSO - SLOW FOOD EDITORE Sportoletti – Assisi Rosso 2001 2 Glasses …Surprising – especially for its price – the Assisi Rosso 2001, from Sangiovese and Merlot grapes, is a wine of slightly grassy tones, but ample and clean, streamlined and very well-balanced in its tannins.
Extract from “GAMBERO ROSSO “ VINE – ALMANAC OF GOOD-DRINKING 2003 Sportoletti – Assisi Rosso 2001 Let’s make it quite clear: only in a few wine shops will you find this tasty red within the price limit of the Almanac. It’s more likely that the final cost “exceeds” by some cent. Excuse us but we really don’t mind. Our aim is to offer our readers a service, indicating the best wines for quality and price, and it would be a real shame to leave out Sportoletti’s Assisi for being a fraction of a euro above the price limit. It is, in fact, one of the best wine of the region: powerful, well-balanced, pulpy and persistent. Not to be missed.
Extract from the monthly “GAMBERO ROSSO” N. 132 GENNAIO 2003 The “Gambero” tasting (The wine of the Almanac) Sportoletti – Assisi Rosso 2001 83/100 This wine produced by Ernesto and Remo Sportoletti, may in some cases exceed the price indicated. Even so it is worth spending a few cents more given the high quality it offers. Made from Sangiovese and Merlot grapes, it is very clean to the nose with a fruity presence and hints of undergrowth. The flavour is full, ample, very well-balanced.
Extract from “Jancis Robinson” Web Site Sportoletti – Assisi Rosso 2000, Umbria - Wine of the week 14 April 2002 One of the most impressive wines at a recent tasting of wines made by the Michel Rolland of Italy, Riccardo Cotarella, was Villa Fidelia 2000 made on the Sportoletti estate in the village of Spello in the province of Perugia. This glamorous blend of Merlot with the two Cabernets is definitely one to watch out for when it is released next month but in the meantime, here is a bargain made from much the same ingredients blended with local Sangiovese. Cotarella has a magic touch with Merlot, turning out wines of almost outrageous ripeness and appeal, and here we have the satisfaction of knowing the wine is not just made from importer grape varieties, but has the rigorous framework of a local vine too. The depth of healthy colour is extremely impressive for a wine at this price and the rich, dark fruit flavours on the nose positively demand that one drinks, rather than swallows it. I was determined to finish the bottle rather than consign it to stack of dozens, sometimes hundreds of rejects, wines that I taste but cannot sincerely recommend. It held up remarkably well to being opened and stoppered then opened and re-stoppered over several days. (I'm not usually so moderate a wine drinker.) Very versatile, appetising, well-balanced stuff without being over the top.
Extract from “The Wine Advocate” of Robert M. Parker Jr.’s. SPORTOLETTI 2000 ASSISI ROSSO ($14.00) RED 86/100 “Umbrian Riccardo Cotarella makes the wines for this small, 50 acre estate situated in the hills near the famous village of Assisi. The 2000 Assisi Rosso is a blend of equal parts Sangiovese and Merlot aged in large foudres. Soft, ripe, stylish and graceful, it displays Burgundian like cherry and floral notes. Drink it over the next 2-3 years.” Closing Date: 8-31-01 Issue 136
Extract from Gambero Rosso “Almanac of good Drinking 2002” Sportoletti – Assisi Rosso 2000 – Oscar quality/price “It’s not easy to find such convincing wines at less than 20/25 thousand lire in wine retailer shops, we can assure you. Sportoletti’s Assisi Rosso has had very flattering appraisals from our Umbrian tasting commissions. A rich, ruby red colour with bright reflections it has powerfully fruity aromas (wild blackberry, blackcurrant, fresh plum) toned down with a rather herbaceous quality. In the mouth it has structure, alcoholic prominence, softness and a nice tannic component.”
Extract from GAMBERO ROSSO “Wines of Italy 2002” Sportoletti – Assisi Rosso 2000 – ....This wine is a success also in terms of its excellent quality/price ratio, the Assisi Rosso ’00 is a blend of Sangiovese and Merlot in which the typical characteristics of the two types of vines are evident, producing a rich and fruity combination, of good complexity and notable balance....
