Climate

In the winter months of January and February climate trend was generically in line with average values, except for rainfalls. In March, rainfalls saw an increase by 60% compared to average values. Due to this fresher spring, the phenological stages were delayed.
This irregular trend continued in the following months: several rainfalls occurred in May and June and temperatures dropped compared to average levels.
July and August were instead sunny and mild, with temperature that only occasionally rose to 30-32° C.
The late harvest, about 15 days after the previous year, allowed for better maturation of grapes which, combined with fresher temperatures, improved the total acidity of grapes and the aromatic compounds. We expect a high-quality wine this year.

Vinification
The grapes stem from 17-18 year-old vineyards located on Spello and Assisi hills, at around 400 meters of altitude. The medium-textured soil is relatively loose, shallow, rich in high-porosity and high-permeability stones due to the alteration of the original sandstones.
Harvest started in early September for Merlot, followed by Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Once harvested, the grapes are moved to the winery and immediately de-stemmed. They are then macerated on stainless steel, thermo-conditioned tanks for about 15 days, with regular pumpovers and delestage. The wine is then moved into 228-liter, French oak barriques where the malolactic fermentation and a 12-month refinement will occur. Further 24 moths of ageing in bottles will then follow.

Alcoholic Content: 15% vol. – Total Acidity: 5.10 g/L – Dry Extract: 31 g/L

Background
The first vintage of Villa Fidelia Rosso dates back to 1990.
In 1998, Sportoletti winery started collaborating with Riccardo Cotarella who changed the way vineyards are managed in addition to wine making techniques and grape blends. Thanks to his expertise, Villa Fidelia Rosso acquires its own identity.
The name Villa Fidelia® refers to a nineteenth-century villa which is just 500 meters far from the winery and represents the town of Spello from the historical and cultural standpoints.

Tasting notes
Intense dark red colour, with complex scents recalling blackberry jam, tobacco, spices, liquorice and chocolate.
Sumptuous and elegant in the mouth, with perfectly balanced silky tannins which clear the way for a rich and long finish.
